Day Eight - Florence and Dinner

We start in Florence at Paolo's Violin Shop and see some of his fine work hanging up in the store.

There are thousands of scooters in Florence, parked wherever there is an extra 4 ft of space.

Today was a big day where we were heading into Florence. Here is one area with authorized scooter parking.

Walking along the waterfront and seeing their famous bridge that dates pre-1500s and where their gold smiths have been selling their wares for that amount of time.

Window shopping....
Onto the magnificent sculptures!

The artwork in the piazzas are straight out of our art history books and reflect all of the great sculptors of the time. There are statues in marble and brass around every corner and the detail is phenomenal.

Neptune overlooking the square.

One of many Florence scholars, artisans, historians and philosophers....this is Leonardo Da Vinci.

Look at the detail in the figure and in the horses. Beautiful!

This is the main Duomo and adjoining baptistery and cathedral.

Into the local market where they have all sorts of available goods.

Joann snaps a photo of the Westin and Grand Hotel...that can only mean one thing, a return visit.

Scooter boy, cutting us off as we leave Florence.

Into Lucia and Paolo's home for an exceptional meal with some things that are a little bit different than the Tuscan fare that we have been exposed to thusfar.

Lucia in action.

This is NOT polenta, but is a different type of appetizer using chickpeas.

Local cheeses are of course included. I believe buffalo cheese was in this mix.

A nice group shot while the first course is being prepared.

Into the workshop where beautiful violins are made, at a rate of 5 or 6 exceptional instruments per year. These are done working in time-honored traditions and are much sought after by musicians internationally.

A work in progress....

Paolo explaining some of the techniques in building an instrument like a violin.

Instruments in various stages of completion.

Tools of the trade.

Alice engaged in a very animated conversation!

Peach pie at the end...it doesn't get any better than this!

Well, maybe the second bite is better than the first!

Does the evening really need to end?
